摘要

In addition to the Black Carbon research mentioned earlier, EPA is also targeting other emissions from diesel engines, notably the 7.3 million. tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) released annually. Although EPA standards have . helped significantly reduce emissions from newly manufactured engines, the agency estimates that more than 11 million older diesel engines are still in operation. To deal with emissions from these older engines, EPA announced on October 20 that it was awarding $50 million in Clean Diesel funding grants. Distributed primarily through allocations to all 50 states, the money will be used to replace, retrofit or repower more than 8,000 older school buses, trucks, locomotives, vessels, and other diesel powered machines.
