Case studyiMethamphetamine intoxication in two dogs

Crystal methamphetamine is cheap and widely available in Iran and is increasingly seen in dogs in veterinary practice. We describe clinical and pathological findings in 2 nine-month-old Spitz dogs with amphetamine intoxication. Both dogs were hyperthermic with tachycardia and bilateral dilated pupils, and one with abdominal skin lesions. Both had mild leukocytosis, lymphocytosis and thrombocytopenia withmild elevation in alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotranferase. Sodium chloride solution and ice packs were given but one dog died at the beginning of treatment. The live dog was kept cool, given cefazoline and acepromazine and released after 3 days. The condition should be considered as a differential diagnosis for similar clinical signs in dogs suspected to be kept by incompetent owners and/or with a history of exposure.
