Effect of temperature and disinfectants on Parascaris equorum eggs.

Microtubes containing eggs of P. equorum were heated at 60, 70, 80 and 90°C for 30and 60 minutes and frozen at -20 and -70°C, for 1, 2, 3 and 5 hours and thawed at room temperature. Other samples of eggs were suspended in ethanol, formalin, sodium hydroxide and potassium dichromate solutions for 7 days. Viability of eggs was assessedin all groups and compared with eggs suspended in saline controls. Temperatures equal or higher than 60 for 30 minutes inactivated or killed P. equorum eggs. Temperatures of -20°C had no effect on egg viability but some did not survive at - 70°C for 30 minutes. Ethanol and formaldehyde solutions at different concentrations reduced the percentage of viable eggs after 1 week of exposure but concentrated ethanol inactivated all eggs. Sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide or potassium dichromate had no effect on eggs.
