Immuno-expression of HER-3, HER-4 and REαin canine mammary carcinomas.

Mammary neoplasms are the most common tumors inbitches that when malignant, produce high mortality due to recurrence or metastases.About 50 to 70% of mammary carcinomas positive for estrogen receptors (ER) havebetter prognoses than ER negative tumors. Aside from ER there are other biomarkersof prognostic value in mammary carcinomas such as epidermal growth factors (HER).However, these receptors are still seldom explored in veterinary oncology. Wedescribe expression of receptors HER-3, HER-4 and REα in 112 canine mammaryneoplasm samples from The Laboratory of Investigative and Compared Pathology(UNESP, Botucatu Campus, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil). Samples underwent immune-histochemical assay (IHC) for HER-3 and HER-4 antibodies employing crescent intensityand distribution scores 0, 1+, 2+ and 3+. For Reα antibody, cases with over 10% of theneoplastic cells with positive nuclear marking were considered positive. One hundredten (98.21%) samples were positive for HER-3 and 107 (95.53%) positive for HER-4.Sixty samples (53.57%) were positive for REα. Findings suggest HER-3, HER-4 and Reαwere expressed differently in canine mammary neoplasms. Clinical studies are neededto establish how expression of these receptors affects incidence, recurrence andaggressiveness of tumors.
