Serum sialic acid levels in horses with and without piroplasmosis (Theileria equi or Babesia caballi)

Levels of serum sialic acid, binding protein and lipid in horses with (17) or without (16) piroplasmosis are reported. Sialic acid, binding protein and lipid were determined by the N-astyl neuramic acid wavelength method. In horses with piroplasmosisor healthy horses without piroplasmosis, total sialic acid values were 67.40.31±2.46 and 45.92±2.36mg/dl (P<0.0001), serum sialic acid binding protein 34.31±2.39 and 25.91±1.52mg/dl (P<0.006), and sialic acid binding lipid 40.41±1.58 and 32.05±1.78mg/dl (P<0.001), respectively. There were no significant correlations between any parameter. Results suggest increases in sialic acid in horses infected with Theileria equi or Babesia caballi.
