Prevalence of salmonellosis in domestic dogs.

Dogs carry and shed Salmonella in great numbers in bowels and mesenteric lymph nodes without clinical signs. This makes prevalence difficult to establish especially in domestic dogs. Authors report prevalence of Salmonella in feces of 65 puppies and 49 adult domestic dogs in Baghdad, Iraq determined by bacteriological and serological methods. Salmonella typhimurium were identified as catalase positive, oxidase negative and on TSI, lactose non-fermenting, producing hydrogen sulphide gas with alkalineslant, acid bottom indole negative. MR negative, VP and citrate positive. Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from feces of 3 puppies and 1 adult males accounting for a low prevalence of ~4.4%. In those infected, clinical signs included variable bloody diarrhea, dehydration, dullness, inappetence, congestion of mucous membrane and increased temperature, pulse and respiration rates.
