For two months, groups of 6 albino 4 to 5 month old rabbits each, were given water with 0.02% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and standard feed with 0.05, 0.1 or 0.2% branched chain amino acid (BCAA) mix, and 0.1% leucine. Controls were 6 rabbits each givenwater with or without 0.02% H2O2 and standard diet. After fasting 12h, blood was taken at days 30 and 60 for serum enzymes. Compared with normal controls, serum alanine and aspartame transaminases, urea and creatinine increased (P < 0.05) in peroxide controls. There were 3 fold increases in creatinine suggesting kidney or protein toxicity. The serum values also increased in rabbits supplemented BCAA but less so (P < 0.05) than peroxide controls especially by Day 60. At day 60 ALT values in peroxide rabbits given BCAA were normal. Our results suggest that BCAA supplements at higher doses may reduce hydrogen peroxide induced liver and/or kidney toxicity in rabbits.
