A C57BL/6 mouse model for atopic dermatis induced by Dermatophagoides farinae mites in dogs.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) with itching and inflammation, is the most common skin allergy in dogs. We describe a mice model for AD. Three groups of 3 C57B1/6 mice were infested twice on skin with a dressing embedded with 0.1ml extract of Dermatophagoidesfarinae mites in 2, 3 or 4 cycles. Mice were infested on days 0, 3, 13 and 16 and rested between days 6 and 13. Controls were taped the same dressing with saline only. We only observed erythema, excoriation and pruritus in mice infested 4 cycles. In those infested 4 cycles we found hyperplasia (controls 6.03±0.37mm), (infested 17.17±3.93mm) and increased mast cells (controls 26±1.04) (infested 137±15.29). However, we found increased perivascular infiltrate in all mice infested by Dermatophagoides farinae. We find that C57Bl6 mice may be useful models for study and treatment of canine atopic dermatitis using repeated with D. farinae dermal infestations.
