Gross morphology and types of pneumonia found at necropsyin 70 horses over 10 years of practice

We recorded gross necropsy findings between 2007-2017 in 70 horses with respiratory distress, labored breathing, cough, nasal discharge or euthanized due to overwhelming respiratory failure. Those showing primary gross lesions in the lower respiratorysystem were diagnosed as pneumonia. Of these, ~57% appeared bronchial, 30% interstitial, 10% embolic and ~3% granulomatous. Exudate textures appeared ~51% purulent, 10% fibrino purulent,~6% fibrinous. However 33% horses had no exudate. We found hemorrhagic pneumonias in 50% horses with edema in 37%, abscesses in ~44%, emphysema in 33%, bronchiectasis in 16% and 17% showed pleuritis. Lungs appeared sequestered in 4.28%, ~17% with adhesions and 10% fibrosis.
