Blood antibody-complement age profile in patients infectedby leishmania tropica and non-infected subjects.

Blood was taken from thirty 10-20, 20-35 and 35-50 year old male and femalepatients infected by Leishmania tropica and non-infected control subjects. Groupsconsisted of 5 individuals in each age group. Blood IgA, IgG, IgM and IgE andcomplement C3 and C4 were determined by ELISA in the 30 subjects. Blood antibodyand C3 levels subjects infected by L tropica were higher (P < 0.05) compared withnon-infected subjects. However, in infected persons, we found no significantdifferences in serum antibody-complement levels between any age group. Antibodyresponses were greater in young infected subjects compared with young noninfectedcontrols. Serum IgA values were ~56%, IgG ~85 and IgM ~59% higher (P <0.05) in young infected persons. We detected a large ~28 fold higher difference (P <0.05) in serum IgE in younger infected patients compared with controls suggestingthat this antibody is most reactive to L tropica. Higher serum IgE values also occurredin older infected age groups. Our findings confirm that Leishmania tropica induceshumoral immunity.
