Effect of GnRH and serum estradiol on reproduction in buffaloes with or without retained fetal membranes.

Blood samples for estradiol were taken from twenty 3rd trimester pregnant buffalo 1-2 weeks before partus. After parturition, those with or without retained fetal membranes (RFM) were injected 0.021mg (5ml) Gonadotropic releasing hormone (GnRH) IM. Wethen monitored days to estrus, open days, service/conception and pregnancy rates. We found ~38% lower serum estradiol (22.8±4.64 pg/ml) in buffalo with RFM compared with those that subsequently expelled the fetal membranes (37.1+3.82 pg/ml; P < 0.01).Buffalo with RFM took ~42% (28.56±4.74 days:P < 0.01) longer to reach estrus compared with those without RFM. Our results suggested that to conceive, buffalo with retained membranes required ~29% more servicing by bulls (P < 0.01) than those without RFM. We also found ~26% more (P < 0.01) open days in those with RFM but no effect on pregnancy rates.
