Prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in sheep (Iraq).

Authors report prevalence of Cryptosporidiosis in sheep in Iraq. Fecal samples were collected from 122 male and 78 females aged 1 - 24 months from Winter to Spring (NH). Cryptosporidium spp oocysts were detected by direct microscopy 1% lugol's iodine,Sheather's sugar solution or modified Ziehl–Neelsen methods. Overall prevalence was 36.5% (73/200) by Sheather's and Ziehl-Neelsen stain but only ~21% with lugol iodine. Most infestations in Iraq occurred in Abu-Ghraib and Al-Yousifia (48%) and least in Al-Bayaa and Al-Doura (28%). In males we found ~32%, females ~45%, 1 to 6 month old 43%, 19-24 month 28%, March ~54%, January 21%, with diarrhea 88% and normal feces ~26% (P < 0.05).
