Effective (ED50) Thymus vulgaris anticoagulant dose in Wistar rats.

Thymus vulgaris contains phytochemicals with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. We report median effective dose of T vulgaris aqueous extract to prevent excessive coagulation in Wistar rats. Rats were intubated 25, 50, 75, 100, 200 mg/kg extract daily for 14 days weeks and gavaged 500mg/kg coagulant aminocaprioc acid (AA) twice every 6 hours. AA reduced bleeding time ~72% (P < 0.05) in control rats not given T vulgaris but with extract reduced it only ~-21 to 51% (P < 0.05). We calculated effective (ED50) of 75mg/kg. T. vulgaris increased plasma activated partial thromboplastin 41-61% (P < 0.05) and prothrombin 41-53%. Findings suggest that T. vulgaris may exert anticoagulant activity in rats via modulation of intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation factors.
