633,700tpy Al capacity closed down, 6.9 mtpy capacity operational and 1.51 mtpy capacity idle

Some Chinese primary aluminum producers have closed down 633,700tpy production capacity in recent two years, most of which are Soderberg capacity, according to the latest survey by Antaike at the end of August this year. The 633,700tpy capacity are owned by 35 smelters, 23 of the 35 smelters (most of them are small sized smelters using Soderberg technology) have shut down all their potlines with a combined capacity of 252,700 tpy; 12 of the smelters closed down part of their potlines with a combined capacity of 389,000tpy,(for example, Lanzhou Aluminum Co., Ltd and Yunnan Aluminum Co., Ltd permanently phased out all their Soderberg capacity). It is estimated that around 450,000tpy Soderberg capacities are still running. A number of Chinese primary aluminum producers also cut aluminum production by reducing currency Strength of potlines, but the capacity of the potlines are not included in the closed 633,700tpy capacity.
