Russian coal output rises

Russian coal output rose by 6pc or almost 24mn t on the year in 2018 to 433.2mn t, according to preliminary data from state energy information agency CDU TEK. Production increased amid strong exports and higher domestic deliver- ies, exceeding the energy ministry’s forecast of 425mn t. Thermal coal accounts for most of Russia's production. A large part of the country's output is exported. Higher output in the Kemerovo region, which is home to the large Kuzbass coal basin where most of Russia's coal mining assets are located, was a main driver behind the increased production. Output in the region rose by 5pc on the year to 252.7mn t, accounting for almost 60pc of the country's total production.
