Russian coal prices rise in 2018

Russian thermal coal prices rose throughout 2018 on greater demand in Asia-Pacific and because of tighter supply in Europe. But values started falling at the end of last year on high stocks in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region and tough competition between suppliers in Asian markets (see graph). The average prices for Russian NAR 6,000 kcal/kg ther- mal coal cargoes delivered to Asia-Pacific showed a strong increase in 2018 compared with 2017, up by an average of $15.22/t year on year to $103.22/t fob Vostochny, according to Argus assessments. Price growth was attributed mainly to robust coal demand in the region in the first half of the year.
