Social norms regulate emotion by shaping appraisal

People are influenced by their peers, but the mechanisms that translate social observations into changes in emotion are not completely understood. In four planned pre-registered experiments, we will test a model whereby information about other people’s actions influences emotional experience and behavior by contributing to how an event’s meaning is appraised.
