Goals and Interpersonal Emotion Regulation in Close Relationships

Emotions are often regulated in a social context, giving close others the opportunity to take part in the emotion regulation (ER) process. However, it is unclear why our loved ones respond in the way that they do. We seek to investigate how individual differences in ER goals predict interpersonal ER strategy use in close relationships (i.e., romantic relationships and friendships). These findings can shed light on the role of motivation in dyadic social interactions.
