Buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.] is a warm-season grass native to the North American Great Plains, and is commonly used in low maintenance sites because of its slow growth and ability to tolerate cold, heat, and drought (Wenger, 1943). As a warm-season grass, buffalograss goes dormant during winter months in Nebraska and begins to greenup in spring well after most perennial broadleaf weeds. These perennial broadleaves and newly-germinated summer annual broadleaves are aestheticallyunappealing in the otherwise dormant stand of buffalograss. Tolerance of established buffalograss to post-emergence herbicides during the summer has been evaluated (Van Dyke and Johnson, 2009), but little information exists for herbicide safety on buffalograss when applied during greenup. Our objective was to evaluate seven commonly used post-emergence herbicides for turf safety when applied before or during buffalograss greenup.
