INFORMAL ECOFIN COUNCIL - EU carbon tax on table, burden sharing stalls

EU finance ministers have had their first talks on a possible Europe-wide carbon tax to cover sectors that are not currently part of the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). The charge would come as part of a revised Directive 2003/96/EC on energy taxation, and Taxation Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs says it could provide much-needed help for ailing government budgets and "put money on the Copenhagen table".
