While the proposed M4 Relief WRoad dominates highways conversations in Wales, away from the headlines work progresses on numerous schemes, including dualling of the A465 Heads of the Valleys road. It runs east-west between the English border and Swansea, crossing the northern edge of the South Wales Valleys region. Sections between Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny previously had three lanes with no central barrier. The dualling is forecast to cost ￡888m. Three sections have been completed and work is well advanced on the ￡220m Gilwern to Brynmawr section, where the design and build contractors are Costain with Atkins, CH2M and RPS. Completion is due by summer 2018.
