A new autonomous vehicle, Aunpacked anywhere in the world, should be able to determine its position and navigate to a specified destination without driver input. This was the challenge set by the Atlas consortium, as part of an Innovate UK-funded feasibility study in which TRL was a partner. Within the project, we assessed the implications of this navigation challenge for storage and transmission of mapping data. The scenario described may not be far off. Onboard navigation systems already deal with determining a route to destination, while vehicle manufacturers are progressing rapidly towards driving without driver input.
