Hot on Hot: pushing the boundaries in road resurfacing

Setting a new industry benchmark was not the only task on the agenda. As part of its drive towards innovation and efficiency, Highways England approved a proposal from Al and Kier to trial a new inline paving technique known as Hot on Hot. Widely used in Germany, Hot on Hot involves using two pavers 'inline' to provide full pavement compaction, interlocking the asphalt without any separation of layers. Unique to the UK, but tested on the continent, this method allows for the paving of a binder and surface course in a single pass, thereby creating a homogenous asphalt package.
