Structural health monitoring

Structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil installations such as highways, bridges, buildings, dams and wind turbines is crucial for their sustainable maintenance, as well as human safety. In the United Kingdom alone there are 50 M-designated motorways with a total of 2,173 miles of road, which carry approximately one third of the UK's traffic. There are also more than 10,000 bridges, worth over ￡1 million each, which are used by millions of people every day who cross them on foot, by car or by train. As such, the structural integrity of highways and bridges must be effectively monitored to ensure safety, prevent accidents and improve maintenance.
