Germany's new Energy Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, appears to be on a collision course with the European Commission over the future of Germany's energy transition, the "Energiewende". Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia has opened a state aid investigation into the German Renewable Energy Act (EEG), mainly attacking clauses that exempt energy-intensive industries from payments for renewable electricity.
