What do submarines, the internet, mobile phones, 3D printers and driverless cars all have in common? They were all first conceived by science fiction writers. After visiting the World's Fair in 1964, Isaac Asimov wrote an essay for the The New York Times imagining what it might look like 50 years later. He predicted that 'much effort will be put into the designing of vehicles with "robot-brains"- vehicles that can be set for particular destinations and that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflexes of a human driver'.
