1.The Economist Intelligence Unit expects a candidate pursuing broadly centrist economic policies will take the presidency in the February 2021 general election. Risks to this outlook are high, given uncertainty over the course of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the potential for the leading leftist candidate to capitalise on the fallout from the crisis and anti-IMF sentiment. 2.In March 2020 the government swiftly introduced measures to control the coronavirus outbreak, including a strict national lockdown. Although the virus spread unabated throughout the country, the government lifted the nationwide state of emergency by September 2020 in an effort to boost the struggling economy.
