In April 2020 the National Strategy Committee ordered a review of the 20-year National Strategy Plan and the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan to account for the negative economic impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The plans, which aim to transform Thailand into a high-income and technology-driven economy, are likely to be revised, with more emphasis on job creation and economic growth. 2. The government declared a nationwide state of emergency in March 2020, enabling the prime minister to exercise sweeping powers unilaterally to contain the pandemic. It began to relax restrictions in May-June 2020. Despite a reduction in new infections, the emergency decree has been extended on multiple occasions and will continue until early 2021.
