Exchange controls

The Bank of Thailand (BoT, the central bank) administers foreign-exchange regulations in accordance with the Exchange Control Act of 1942 (amended in 1984) and Ministerial Regulation 13 of 1954. The BoT last imposed strict capital controls in 2006. Most were repealed or eased in the following years, and few restrictions remained in place as of end-November 2020. The BoT introduced reforms in 2017 to promote foreign investment. Key changes include the following: (1) streamlining documentation requirements for outward remittance, and (2) allowing commercial banks to lend in Thai baht to non-residents for investment in Thailand (subject to conditions) or infrastructure/project finance in Thailand's neighbouring countries.
