Safer street, better communities

This year's traffic managers conference tackled one of the most critical and tragic issues in our society, violence against women and girls, specifically how the highways sector can play its part in making the streets safer. Opening the conference was Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) interim managing director Anne Shaw, who alongside her colleague, West Midlands Combined Authority interim chief executive Laura Shoaf, was chosen by the Government to be the UK's first Violence Against Women and Girls Transport Champions. Ms Shaw and Ms Shoaf are working on a six-month research project for the Department for Transport (DfT) to provide recommendations around transport and the streetscene that will 'become part of a national strategy about how we deal with violence against women and girls'.
