Fast-rising exports

Vietnam is on its way to becoming an agro-industria! powerhouse. In addition to cashew nuts, coffee and pepper, the country is a major seafood producer. Vietnam earned US972 million dollar from exporting aquatic products in the first six months of 2004, up 4% from the same period in 2003. The growth rate is not as high as expected due to a poorer harvest of shrimp, which is the main export of the sector Major shrimp producing provinces in the southein region such as Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Kien Giang only managed to achieve around 37 3% of their yearly export plan. A number of shrimp processing enterprises imported materials to ensure production, but their processed products were not competitive due to the high production costs.
