The past year was generally a difficult year for Angora ram breeders as well as mohair producers. After relatively good prices during the summer season, the mohair market headed downwards toward poor prices during the winter season.The market did nothave the anticipated negative effect on the early ram sales, but the demand on especially the Beaufort West veld ram sale was limited. Another factor which adds to the pressure on our breeders, is the dwindling number of Angoras in the country. The dry winter and first half of summer coupled to the losses in September last year because of inclement weather, had a serious impact on our young stock. It will probably be noticed only during the year ahead. The negative effect of low mohair prices during the winter season and labour matters encouraged the gradual flow of Angora goats to the meat markets I will return to these matters later.
