摘要

The remarkable article by Brotanek and et al that reviewed secular trends in iron deficiency is a tribute to nutrition programs' power to affect the nutritional status of poor individuals. The data from several National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANESs) show that a mix of food fortification and support for consumption of nutritious food has dramatically reduced the occurrence and impact of iron deficiency among children in poor families. However, theoutliers in Brotanek and colleagues' study, Hispanic youth, raise important questions related to concomitant occurrence of obesity and iron deficiency.
