Rain in Thailand insufficient to rescue pineapple harvest

RAIN fell on some of Thailand's pineapple growing areas this week, for the first time since October. With the country gripped by the worst drought in decades, however, its production potential is seen as lower this year and raw material prices have accordingly lifted. Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation revealed the size of the problems this week, saying that the drought has already affected 9.56 million people in 66 provinces. Furthermore, it has damaged more than 13.7 million rai (2.19 million hectares) of agricultural land, with losses already calculated at THB5.5 billion.
