On paper, condition monitoring (CM) is a relatively straightforward concept, allowing users to regularly assess the performance levels of equipment and machinery. However, when applied in practice to the shipping industry, CM can throw up a number of complex issues. In addition to having appropriate communications systems in place, the process requires the establishment of, and commitment to, a 'maintenance culture', which is as much about a mind-set as it is about technology.
