According to International Maritime Organization (IMO) carriage requirements all vessels over 300gt on international voyages and all vessels over 500gt must now have an automatic identification system (AIS) fitted. AIS is a transponder and display system operating in the VHF maritime band that enables the tracking of vessels by shore-based stations and other vessels. Information provided by AIS to other ships, as well as to shore stations, includes ship identification, position, heading, length, beam, type, and draught, as well as any hazardous cargo information. This is shown on a minimum keyboard and display (MKD), or overlayed on a ship's radar or electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS).
