Hamburg-based aviation engineers Lufthansa Technik, a subsidiary of the German national airline Lufthansa, specializes in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of aircraft, their engines and components. The company's clients include the operators of some of the grandest private aircraft. There are around 250 of these flying palaces currently in service around the world, and Lufthansa Technik cares for around 20 per cent of them, with several more currently being fitted out at its Completion Center in Hamburg. Central to the transformation from airlinerto high-specification private jet is Lufthansa Technik's in-house ideas department Innovation Engineering, which is at the forefront of cabin systems development and manufacturing. This skilled department has developed the Networked Integrated Cabin Equipment (NICE) system to act as a backbone to link and manage the aircraft lounges, sleeping quarters, conference and work compartments, as well as communications and entertainment systems.
