A prototype ambulance is demonstrating how Inmarsat links can help quickly stabilize severe trauma victims to significantly aid their chance of survival. The one-hour period immediately following any severe injury is critical for the survival of the patient. This period is often referred to as The Golden Hour', a term originally coined by Dr R Adams Cowley - a pioneer of modern trauma care and founder of the Shock Trauma Center at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services in the US. Dr Cowley advocated that most trauma patients die of shock, which limits circulation and results in chemical changes in the body. He believed most patients could be saved if the bleeding could be stopped and the blood pressure restored within the first hour.
