Most air travellers have experienced the 'mad minute', that frantic rush to get a call or message before they must switch off their phone when the aircraft doors closes. Its the same when the aircraft lands and the doors open to disembark. There could be no more eloquent testimony to the existence of a real, pent-up demand for in-flight phone facilities. Previously, some phone services offered by airlines have not been a huge commercial success. Passengers have been put off by tariffs, complex handsets wired into the seat or bulkhead, and having to deal with bills from unfamiliar providers. Now there is a solution on the horizon in the form of services being developed by OnAir, AeroMobile and others. OnAir is a joint venture by Airbus and SITA. AeroMobile was set up by ARINC and Telenor Satellite Services.
