COM DEV is aiming to revolutionise Automatic Identification System (AIS) data services, with the launch of its subsidiary entity exactEarth, which is using a constellation of microsatellites in space to collate and deliver global AIS data to maritime authorities. The space-based AIS (AIS-S) venture, which has spent five years in development, at a cost of US$20 million, is intended to offer superior AIS coverage to terrestrial systems, with the microsatellites' polar orbit providing comprehensive coverage of the global surface.
