The Government announced in January that it will press ahead with proposals to charge motorists on trunk roads and motorways. The plan to put pressure on urban roads in order to force more people to switch to public transport needs a huge traffic management IT network, the like of which has yet to be seen in the UK. This would certainly be the case if toll booths were rejected in favour of the toll system widely in use in the USA and Europe and which embraces the very latest technology.
