Kentucky Mine Closed After Water Builds Up Behind Seals

MSHA issued an imminent-danger withdrawal order after the agency found a massive water accumulation backed up against three seals in the Freedom Energy Mining Co. Mine #1 in Pike County, Ky., on July 9. No injuries resulted from the problem. Water reached to the mine roof on the inside of the seals, which separated the active workings from a mined-out area measuring some 8,000 by 4,800 feet, MSHA mining engineer Randy Newsome stated in the withdrawal order.
