Improving the service

England's motorways and trunk roads play a vital role in the transport infrastructure of this country. Around one third of a billion kilometres are driven every day on this strategic road network, which carries two thirds of all freight and a third of all road traffic. These roads are, therefore, the social and economic backbone of this country and so it is vital they are kept open and in good condition. The Government is fully aware of the impact congestion has on all road users and through the 10 Year Plan we are committed to tackling this issue.
