First collision proves passive safety's worth in Durham

The vehicle involved was a small soft-top MGF Sports car which skidded off the carriageway and hit a Kapu lighting column at speed but sustained relatively minor damage. The impact was a drivers 'side-on' collision, theoretically the most dangerous type of impact yet the female driver was uninjured. The accident happened at approximately 9:20am in Chester le Street when the road conditions according to the police were wet with light rain which would have contributed to the skid that saw the vehicle leave the carriageway and impact the lighting column.
