Another large hazelnut crop will cause trouble for Turkey

TURKEY'S 2008 hazelnut crop is said to be flourishing with perfect weather conditions for a good sized crop. Early surveys are reflecting this and industry insiders are projecting a crop of between 800 000-900 000 tonnes (in-shell), making this year'sharvest a record amount. However, it is also looking like ahuge influx of hazelnuts is the last thing the market needs at the moment. To date, the hazelnut market remains quiet with virtually no buyers, leading to fears that once the 2008 crop becomes available it could result in an over-supply of nuts and a reduction in market prices.
