Specialist team to tackle managed motorways programme

Managed Motorways use techniques such as variable speed limits, hard-shoulder running and ramp metering and provide a framework under which new technologies and systems can be developed. Managed Motorways stem from the announcement by the Department for Transport in January 2009 with up to ￡6billion going into the roads programme over the next five years including this financial year (2009 -2010). It means the Agency is tasked to deliver 520 new lane miles and over 340 of those miles will entail hard-shoulder running.
