The whole industry should be congratulated for the latest accident figures which show the lowest number of people killed on the roads since records began in 1962. Highways professionals have had a huge role to play in bringing down the gruesome toll of fatalities on our roads through a constant string of innovations and initiatives. Of course everybody realises that road safety is a never-ending battle and any let-up in terms of complacency or a cut in investment can, quite literally, prove fatal. Worrying signs are already emerging from the Government that the Department for Transport will be one of the main areas to suffer when it comes to budget cuts looming inevitably on the horizon.
