Road death figures show Britain tops highways safety league

Britain now has the safest roads in the developed world as latest figures revealed the number of people killed in this country reached a record low last year. A total of 2,538 died last year - the lowest annual total since records began in 1926. The death toll is 14 per cent down on the 2,946 who were killed in 2007. The number of people who died or suffered serious injuries on the roads was 28,567, a decline of 7 per cent in a year, while the total number of casualties, which includes slight injuries, stood at just under 231,000 -another 7 per cent fall.
