Managed Motorways allow the capacity of the network to be dynamically controlled in response to fluctuating traffic demand, and are being increasingly deployed as a cost-effective alternative to road widening. Schemes utilise features such as Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running; Variable Mandatory Speed Limits; and Ramp Metering to deliver tangible benefits to the travelling public in the form of smoother traffic flows and improved journey time reliability.
