The Hindhead Tunnel: A case study

Early in 2007, after decades of planning, construction started on the Hindhead Tunnel - the UK's longest underland road tunnel -near Hindhead in Surrey. Now, more than four years on, the new four mile bypass is about to open to traffic. Most drivers in South East England will be familiar with traffic bulletins announcing 'the usual queues at Hindhead' each morning and afternoon as their daily commute is underway. 30,000 of them each day experience the queues for themselves. The tunnel will make these delays a thing of the past, and also comes with a host of other benefits, for road users, the environment and local people alike.
